What's New?

March/2008 The behavior of the month/year selection box has been changed. The default month/year was always the current month/year, which allowed the viewer to easily return to the current month/year. However, this default selection didn't always match the displayed month/year, which caused confusion. The default month/year selection is now the displayed month/year.

To compensate for the behavior change, if your calendar uses a next/previous month control that includes a moon in the middle like this:

clicking the moon button now displays events for the current month/year.

October/2007 Spice up your calendars! A new event editor allows you to easily add bold, italics, color, links, images and more. From the Calendar Administration page, check the "Event Editor" checkbox to enable the new editor. A help page, accessible from a link near the controls, provides guidance.

Note: if you use this new feature, consider sending email reminders as HTML, since event descriptions will include HTML tags. This feature can be enabled from the Calendar Administration page.

June/2007 E-mail reminder messages now include the event category name, which appears below the event time.
May/2007 The calendar header and/or footer can be removed dynamically using URL parameters. This is useful to produce another view of your calendar with the header or footer removed. For example, to display a small calendar with no header, you can use a URL similar to this: Note the use of the vm=-h URL parameter. Use vm=-f to remove the footer or vm=-h-f to remove both.
January/2007 The calendar week can begin on Monday. The week starting day can now be selected from the Calendar Administration page: Sunday or Monday.
October/2006 When a recurring event is changed, there are now 3 options:
  1. Change only the current event.
  2. Change all occurrences of the event.
  3. Change the current event and all future occurrences of the event.
The last option is new. This enhancement was implemented for deletions last July. The same functionality now applies to changes as well.

There is also a new option called "Leave gaps". If an occurrence of an event has been deleted, you can now elect not to recreate it. To illustrate this, suppose you add an event and specify that it should repeat every week for a year; then delete 3 of the 52 events. There are now gaps in the repeating pattern. If this recurring event is edited, by default, the events for those three days will be recreated. This new option allows you to not recreate the deleted events.

August/2006 When an event is posted, it can be copied to multiple calendars. In the past it was only possible to copy an event to one additional calendar. This was accomplished by entering the calendar ID. Now, the complete list of calendars is displayed, allowing the user to select calendars to which the event should be copied. If the group includes more than two calendars, an "All" button can be clicked to automatically select all calendars.

This new feature must be enabled from the group administration page, which includes three choices for specifying copy permissions. When an event is posted, it can be copied to:

  1. Multiple calendars
  2. Only one calendar
  3. No calendars
If the last choice is selected, the calendar copy feature is disabled and the controls are not displayed. This is handy for group administrators who don't want their group members to see the event copy controls. The default permission setting is number 2.

Individual calendar permissions apply to event copying. For example, if a group member doesn't have permission to create an event for a given group calendar, it is not included in the list of calendars in the event copy area. So if a group member only has permission to create events in 3 of 10 calendars, only the 3 calendars will be listed.

If a group includes only one calendar, the calendar copy options are not displayed from the Group Administration page or the event posting page, since events can only be copied to calendars within the same group.

July/2006 When a recurring event is deleted, there are now 3 options:
  1. Delete only the current event.
  2. Delete all occurrences of the event.
  3. Delete the current event and all future occurrences of the event.
The last option is new.
February/2006 When an event is posted a link can be included. The event posting page includes two new fields, one for the URL (Web address) and one for the link text. Viewers will click the link text to go to the specified URL. The link is displayed below the event description. Email reminders will also include the link. If no link text is entered, the URL will become the link text. If no URL is entered, the link text is treated as plain text.

A new "Allow Links" check box has been added to the Calendar Administration page. This box must be checked to enable the new link fields in the event posting page.

Previously, links could only be added to an event by entering the HTML tags or including the URL in the event description. This functionality is still supported, but this new feature treats the link URL and the link text as new event fields which can be managed separately.

October/2005 When an event is added or changed, it can be marked private. Private events are only visible to the event owner and the group administrator. This new feature can be enabled from the calendar administration page. Once enabled, a new Private check box will be available above the event repeat options from the event posting page. By default, events are not private. You must be logged in to view and post private events.

This feature makes it easier for group members to share a calendar. Group members can make all events private except those that should be shared with the group. This feature can also be used to hide events from the general public.

September/2005 An e-mail notification can be sent whenever an event is added, changed and/or deleted. The notification recipient's e-mail address can be entered from the Calendar Administration page, which also includes check boxes to specify what triggers the notification:
when an event is added, changed, or deleted.
Note that e-mail notifications are not the same as e-mail reminders. Notifications are sent immediately when an event is added, changed or deleted, whereas e-mail reminders are sent the specified number of minutes, hours or days before the event. Also, e-mail reminders are set up when the event is posted.
June/2005 Group administrators can now easily set or change the owner of an event. When a group administrator adds or edits an event, the owner of the event can be selected from a list of group members, assuming a member list has been created for the group. This makes it easy for a group administrator to create an event which a group member can then modify. The new event owner selection list appears below the category and time zone selection lists of the event posting page. Only group administrators will see this selection list.
May/2005 A new feature has been added to help deal with events added while daylight savings time is in effect. When an event is added, the system determines if daylight savings time is in effect for the calendar's time zone. If so, the daylight savings time zone setting is selected by default. For example, if your calendar's default time zone is U.S. Eastern Time, and daylight savings time is in effect, Eastern Daylight Time is the default time zone selection when an event is added.
January/2005 A powerful new event conflict notification feature is now available. When an event is added that overlaps the time period of an existing event, the system can be configured to display a warning or error message. If categories have been established for the calendar, the calendar owner can specify that events must also be within the same category to be considered a conflict. The event conflict behavior is specified from the Calendar Administration page. The calendar owner can decide to:
  • ignore conflicts, (this is the default behavior)
  • display a warning and allow conflicts, or
  • prevent conflicts.

With the addition of this feature, advanced scheduling is now possible. This is particularly useful for managing reservations of conference rooms, equipment, appointments, etc.

September/2004 A new option is available from the Calendar Administration page. The default monthly view begins with the first day of the month and ends with the last day of the month, usually resulting in abbreviated first and last weeks of the month. The new option offers the ability to show all days of the first and last week. For example, with this new option enabled, the September 2004 calendar begins with the 29th, 30th and 31st of August, and ends with the 1st and 2nd of October.

The option is called "First/last week days" and is enabled by checking a box. The option can also be enabled dynamically using the "fldow" URL parameter. For example:

August/2004 The Advanced View interface has a new option that appears below the "Printer Friendly" check box:
If an event title exists, show the description also
When an event is posted an event title can be entered in addition to the event description. When events are displayed, the event title is displayed as a link. If the viewer clicks the event title link, the event description is displayed in a small popup window. This new Advanced View option allows the viewer to display both the title and the description. This is useful for archiving and printing calendar events.
All e-mail reminders are now sent out individually. Previously, e-mail reminder messages were each sent as a single message to a list of comma separated e-mail addresses. This change obviates the need for a bcc (blind carbon copy) option when a reminder is established. Recipients will only see their e-mail address in the "To:" field of e-mail reminder messages.
A new "Profile" button links to a page from which group members can change their password, e-mail address and name. This new button only appears when a group member is logged in.
Announced a Policy Change regarding free calendars.

March/2004
A new pricing structure for multiple customized calendars has been established. The new pricing makes it much more affordable for organizations to customize multiple calendars. The previous price was $4.95 per calendar per month or $49.95 per calendar per year. The new prices offer substantial reductions. For example, the total cost for 10 calendars is now $14.95 if paid monthly (a 70% reduction), or $159.95 if paid yearly (a 68% reduction).
Cost
Calendars Paid Monthly Paid Yearly
1$4.95$49.95
2-5$8.95$99.95
6-10$14.95$159.95
11-20$24.95$269.95
21-50$49.95$549.95

February/2004 E-mail reminders can be sent as HTML. By default, e-mail reminders are sent as plain text, but a new option on the Calendar Administration page can be selected to send e-mail reminders as HTML. If this option is selected, HTML tags embedded in event descriptions and event titles will be included in e-mail reminder messages. The Hunt Calendars logo is included at the top of the HTML e-mail message, unless the calendar has been customized. The HTML e-mail message also includes the plain text version, which allows the recipient's e-mail program to decide which version to use.
January/2004 The grid calendar view has been enhanced. The columns that separate days of the week are now nearly equal in width. The width of the calendar and the columns are a percentage of the window width. As the browser window grows or shrinks in width, the calendar columns are resized accordingly. The width of each column is a percentage of the total width of the calendar, but due to HTML limitations, the percentages are not exact, so the Wednesday column may be slightly wider or narrower than other columns. Column width percentages are not supported by some older Web browsers, such as Netscape 4.7 and earlier.
A new e-mail reminder feature offers the ability to send event notification immediately. This feature can be used to immediately notify a group when an event has been added or changed. When an event is added or changed, two notifications can be set up to send e-mail reminders minutes, hours or days before the event. And if a new check box is checked, a reminder will be sent immediately also.
Vertical grid lines have been added to the calendar grid view. Previously, alternating colors were used to delimit columns that represent days of the week for calendar grids. Also, the horizontal lines that separate weeks have been widened from 1 to 2 pixels.
December/2003 Several calendar owners have agreed to list their calendars on the Sample Calendars page. All of the calendars in the list have been customized. Visitors can now see several examples of "live" calendars.
May/2003 Event times can now be displayed using military/24-hour notation. For example, 1:00PM is displayed as 13:00. This new option is accessible from the Calendar Admin page. Event times are not automatically converted to military time notation when the new option is selected. Existing event times after 12:59PM must be changed manually. This enhancement suggestion came from Mats Svensson in Sweden.

March/2003 A new e-mail list feature is now available for customized calendars. This feature allows calendar owners to create multiple e-mail lists to be used for sending reminders. The Calendar Admin page includes a new Manage E-mail Lists button that launches an intuitive interface for adding, changing and deleting e-mail lists. To create a new e-mail list, the calendar owner enters a name and a list of e-mail addresses. E-mail lists can be shared by all calendars that belong to the group. Each e-mail list can include up to 500 addresses.

When a viewer adds or edits an event, one or more e-mail lists can be selected from the Reminders area. E-mail addresses can also be entered in a text area as before. Since e-mail lists are managed separately from event information, events needn't be changed when e-mail addresses change.

E-mail reminder messages now include the event title in the e-mail subject. Thanks to Kevin Gentry for this idea.
February/2003 Calendar owners have the option of showing only weekdays (Monday - Friday). Saturdays and Sundays will not be shown. The option has been added to the Calendar Admin page. This is useful if your calendar only has events for the standard work week. This also saves space when using the traditional wall calendar grid style.
A traditional wall calendar grid option is now available. Calendar owners can select a calendar style of list or grid from the Calendar Admin page. The default style is list. The calendar grid width varies according to the width of the browser window. The calendar style can be changed dynamically using a new URL parameter. For example, the s=g parameter instructs the calendar system to display events in a grid style:
http://www.huntcal.com/cgi/calview.cgi/mother/nature?s=g
The s=l parameter sets the calendar style to list:
http://www.huntcal.com/cgi/calview.cgi/mother/nature?s=l

A new Event Title can be entered when an event is added or changed. If an event title exists, it is displayed rather than the event description. The viewer can click the event title to see the event description, which appears in a small popup window. This is especially useful for the calendar grid display since space is limited.

A new option has been added to the Calendar Admin page that determines how line breaks should be treated in event descriptions. The default behavior has been to start a new line when a line break is encountered. The new option offers the ability to override this behavior and ignore line breaks. This is useful if your event description contains HTML tags.
January/2003 It is now much easier to create alternate views of your calendars. New URL parameters are supported that offer numerous viewing options. For example, you can easily generate a calendar of events that only shows the events. A calendar URL can be constructed that tells the calendar system not to show the calendar table, the month navigation controls, the viewing options selector, the week view "eye" icons, the event list or the legend that appears at the bottom right.

Advanced View commands can also be passed using URL parameters. This allows you to create links to calendar views for arbitrary date ranges. For example, the URL below tells the calendar system to show a "read-only" view of events for the next two months:
http://huntcal.com/cgi/adview.cgi/mother/nature?m2=now+1&vm=rs

There are so many new controls, we found it necessary to create a tutorial. A few new sample calendar examples have also been added that demonstrate the new flexibility of the calendar system.
November/2002 An option was added to the Calendar Admin page to set "bcc" as the default method for sending e-mail reminders. This is useful if you need to send all e-mail reminders as blind copies. Setting this option as the default reduces the possibility that your e-mail list will be visible. The "bcc" option can still be unset when an event is posted.
A Sample Calendars page has been created. This page shows some sample customized calendars that demonstrate the use of categories and custom headers and footers.
Categories can now be established for events. The calendar owner can create a list of event categories. A color can optionally be associated with each category. When an event is posted, the viewer can select from the list of categories to specify the event type. The calendar owner can elect to show the category names, colors, or both when the events are displayed. Event category names are displayed in a column to the left of the event description.

A new "Categories" area has been added to the Calendar Admin page that includes:
  • a "Category Management" button, which launches the Category Management page. This page allows the viewer to easily add, change and delete categories. A color can be selected for each category. Up to five categories can be added at a time. There is no limit to the number of categories that can be created. Categories can be shared by all calendars that belong to the same group. The calendar owner can add categories that belong to another group calendar.
  • a choice to show category names, colors, or both when events are displayed.
  • a choice to require category selection when an event is posted.
  • a "category label", which is used to describe your categories when events are displayed. For example: Event type, Room number, Employee, Department.
The Advanced View interface has been enhanced to allow the viewer to search for events by category. The viewer can select one or more categories from the list, and the system will display only the selected types of events. The interface works in association with the other controls, which allows for complex searches such as:
find all events from November 1, 2002 to February 20, 2003 that include the word "Sam" and the category "birthday" or "meeting".
October/2002 The printer friendly calendar display has been changed to use the browser's default fonts. This gives the viewer more control over the text when printing calendars. The default font family and size can be changed using the Web browser preferences, and the printer friendly calendar view will honor the selections.
Added the capability to repeat events every fifth, sixth or seventh day, week, month or year.
Added a gray separator between each day's event display. This makes it easier to visually separate events by day.

Removed banner ads that were previously shown in the upper right corner of all windows. The ads were just too annoying! They also didn't generate enough income to justify their existence. In order to generate some revenue, "pop-under" ads have been introduced. These are small windows that appear behind the browser window. They should only be visible when you exit your browser. This approach should be less intrusive.
September/2002 New options for repeating events have been introduced. You can now repeat an event every other, every third, or every fourth day, week, month or year.
All banner ads will be disabled for the entire day.
A Day View feature was introduced that allows the viewer to view events for one day at a time. If no day is specified, events for the current day are displayed. To view events for another day, select a number from the calendar that appears on the left side of the window. The currently selected day is shown with a white background color in the calendar table.
An Advanced View feature has been implemented. This new feature includes two capabilities: the ability to show events within a range of dates, and the ability to search for events by keyword. These capabilities can be combined to search for events within a time period that include your keywords. A printer friendly view is also available.
August/2002 The big news this month is the release of Hunt Calendars Version 2 ! The new system includes several important enhancements:
  • Calendar customization, which makes it easy to replace the Hunt Calendars branding with your own. The header (area at the top of the page) and the footer (area at the bottom of the page) can be completely controlled by the group administrator. All calendars that belong to the group share the customizations. There is a small charge if you elect to use this feature. (Learn more)
  • In the previous release, the group administrator was able to upload an HTML snippet that was displayed below the calendar. These HTML snippets are no longer displayed. The customization feature must now be used to provide custom HTML.
  • The Calendar Administration page offers calendar behavior and design options, some of which were previously available from the "Preferences" page. From the Calendar Administration page, you can elect to hide past events, change the color scheme, background colors and next/previous month controls. You can also elect not to show the time zone when displaying events.
  • The Preferences page has been eliminated. Most of the settings can be changed from the Calendar Administration page.
  • The majority of the content from the Help page has been updated and moved to a new FAQ page. The Help page is now used to get help by sending a message to help@huntcal.com.
  • A new Log In button allows you to log in.
  • When you Log Out, a form appears that lets you change your profile. You can change your ID, password, e-mail address and name.
  • If an e-mail address is entered, the system can send ID/password information to you via e-mail. This capability is available from the log in page.
  • Trial calendars are no longer offered. This reduces the choices when first time users create a calendar or group.
  • The syntax for setting the read-only attribute has been changed. Setting such attributes via URL parameters is now more consistent and powerful. See the FAQ for details.
  • The Advanced View option has been eliminated temporarily. It will be improved and available some time in August/2002.
  • SSL can be used to encrypt information sent to and from the server.
  • The Go to my calendar page now offers the ability to go to the Calendar Administration page or the Group Administration page.
  • "Cookies" are no longer required. If you have "cookies" turned off, the system keeps track of the session by passing a session ID as a URL parameter.
  • A "printer friendly" viewing option has been added that produces a very simple list of events.
